On Saturday afternoon in Patriots stadium, the Pattys welcomed Clay HS from Oregon, OH (Toledo) for the 4th straight year in what has become a great relationship and early season measuring stick of two traditional powers from Northern and Central Ohio.
The Eagles would strike first in the 36th minute when a shot from the left flank hit the crossbar, and a backside runner was first to the carom and headed it in to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Patriots countered early in the second half when some good combination play off a throw in between Elise Koshan and Emma Lindsey directed a pass to the Quinn Casey who made a run to the left of center, slotted a one time left footed pass through traffic to Nora Gilger who tapped in the score after a well timed back post run to knot the score at 1-1.
The winning goal for Clay came in the 68th minute when Clay countered quickly off a turnover in the midfield, slotted a ball behind the Pattys back line resulting in a cross to a trailing attacker who buried the chance, and the score would end at 2-1 in favor of Clay.
Clay had an advantage in shots 7-5, corners 7-3 and in possession 60/40 en route to the win. Riley Cartwright recorded 5 saves and Gilger’s goal was the first of her Varsity career. The Pattys are now 1-1-1 on the year.
In the earlier JVA match which was shortened due to weather delays, Liberty prevailed 1-0 and rise to 2-1-0 on the season.
Next up for Liberty is Hilliard Davidson on Tuesday, August 28th with JVA at 5:30PM and Varsity at 7:15PM.
