Thursday was Senior Night at Patriots Stadium in a conference matchup with Westerville Central.  With conference championship implications on the line,  Liberty rebounded from its poor showing against Watterson and delivered a 1-0 win to go to 11-2-0 on the season and 4-0-0 in conference. Before the match, Seniors Emma Campbell, Ellie Bambeck, Abby Summers, Sophie Fallieras, Emma Koshan, Sheila Colbert, Morgan Gray, Sarina Dirrig and Grace Poncsak were honored.

During the match, Liberty had an advantage in overall possession, but the Warhawks proved to be a tough challenge with their team speed and strong transition play. Early in the match, the Central goalkeeper denied Natalie Amodeo of what appeared to be a certain goal with a diving save to her left.  The next 25 minutes featured some solid soccer from both sides, but with very few chances for either team.  Midway through the first half, Emma Campbell made a key save on a deflected shot off a cross, but that would be the only scoring chance for the Warhawks in the half.

In the 38th minute, Abby Townsend would deliver the game winner when she received a driven pass from Olivia Sensky, chipped the ball over the head of the defender, ran behind the back line to receive her own pass and finished the chance with one of the season’s highlight goals.

In the second half, Grace Poncsak finished the match between the posts and came off the line to stuff the Warhawks solitary second half scoring chance. Although Westerville Central continued to high press, the Liberty defense stood tall and as a team recorded the sixth clean sheet of the season.

Liberty has a challenging week ahead with 3 matches in 5 days to conclude the season in advance of the OHSAA tournament, whose draw is this weekend.  In addition, the match at Olentangy next Thursday will determine the OCC Buckeye Division conference championship. The Pattys currently stand at #9 in the most recent OSCCA State Poll and #2 in the Central District.

Stay tuned for OHSAA tournament updates.

GO PATTYS!
