For the second straight game, the Pattys’ veterans were thinking about avenging a 2014 setback. Liberty was ready and waiting for the Dublin Coffman Shamrocks, who were ranked #5 in the most recent State Poll, entering the game with a 9-0-2 record, and 4-0-1 in conference.  When the game was over, the scoreboard showed 3-2 in favor of the Patriots in an exciting matchup with Conference Championship implications.

The Pattys controlled possession the entire game, won the battle of the 50/50 balls, outshot the Rocks 16 to 7, and earned 9 corners to Coffman’s 2.  Coffman was limited mainly to counterattacks and playing direct long balls to their Sophomore speedster, Abby Steiner, but did not have much success in possession or building the attack from back to front.

Liberty opened the scoring in the 10th minute, when Senior Jordan Fike led the attack down the flank and slotted a perfect crossing pass in the space between Coffman’s sweeper and stopper to Senior Captain Hailey Pickelheimer, who finished the chance in stride with a left footed strike past the Coffman goalkeeper. The assist was Fike’s team leading 11th of the season, and Pickelheimer’s 5th goal.

In the 18th minute, Coffman would score when it appeared a foul was to be called after advantage was not gained, but the referee allowed play to continue, a brief hesitation on the part of the Pattys resulted in a turnover and Dublin scored off a quick counterattack against the run of play, leveling the score at 1-1.

The Pattys then began pressing the attack again, only to find themselves down 2-1 going in to the half after a controversial call where it appeared Liberty Junior Goalkeeper Emma Campbell had saved a shot that rocketed off the post, and play continued.  However, the Assistant Referee stopped play and appealed to the Center Referee that the ball had fully crossed the line, and Coffman was awarded their second score.

In the second half, the Patriots continued strong play and possession, but lacked patience in the finishing third for the first few minutes. Liberty would gain composure and in the 51st minute Sophomore Abby Jones outworked 3 Rocks players on the flank, resulting in crossing pass to Junior Sarina Dirrig who calmly slotted the ball into the net for her team leading 11th goal.IMG_2813

The 2-2 deadlock would be broken in the 70th minute when Senior Captain Emma Waters whipped in a corner to Senior Meridith Shook whose shot was partially blocked by the Coffman keeper, but was not secured and slipped across the line for the game winner.

The win raised the Pattys conference record to 6-0-0, and based on previous scoring methods, Liberty appears to have captured at least a share of their second straight OCC Central District Championship.  A win or tie versus Thomas Worthington next Tuesday would leave no doubt. Athletic Director Darin Meeker will be confirming the status, but here is where the conference leaders stand at the end of the evening (3 points for win, 1 for tie, 0 for loss):

  • Olentangy Liberty (6-0-0), 18 points, 1 game remaining vs. Thomas Worthington (maximum point potential is 21
  • Thomas Worthington (4-0-2), 1 game remaining vs. Liberty (maximum point potential is 17)
  • Dublin Coffman (4-1-1), 13 points, 1 game remaining vs. UA (maximum point potential is 16)

In the earlier match, JVA raised their record to 6-5-1 with a solid shutout performance, the sole goal being delivered by Sophomore Madison Rapier late in the second half, unassisted.

Thursday night vs. Grove City is Senior Night, let’s rally the troops to honor Jordan Fike, Hailey Pickelheimer, Meridith Shook and Emma Waters.

GO PATTYS!
