The Varsity Pattys walked into Braves Stadium on a windy and cold October evening, with a similar night from just over a year ago fresh on their minds. The highly motivated Liberty Girls Soccer team delivered a solid, total team performance to bring home a 4-1 victory in front of a spirited visiting Patriot crowd.

Both teams came out in the first half playing excellent soccer, and the match was very even with the score level at 0-0 at intermission.

However, the Pattys came out in the second half with a high level of intensity and began to control possession and build the attack much better as a unit despite playing into a strong wind. In the 41st minute Liberty opened the scoring when Sophomore Sydney Weaver made a well timed overlapping run, received a pass from Senior Jordan Fike, and Weaver then beat her defender and sent a crossing pass to Senior Captain Hailey Pickelheimer who finished the chance in stride.

Eight minutes later, Liberty would strike again when Fike beat her defender down the right flank and sent a well timed cross to Junior Sarina Dirrig who beat the diving Olentangy goalkeeper to find the back of the net.

Olentangy would make the match interesting 65th minute when the Patriots were not able to clear a corner kick cleanly out of the box, and Olentangy’s Sara Markel roofed a blast into the top of the net to draw Olentangy within a goal.

However, Liberty did not allow that result to stand, and when Olentangy went to three in the back to get more players into the attack, Liberty exploited the stretched out Braves defense featuring a deep sweeper and delivered two more goals; a second from Dirrig off Fike’s crossing assist (2nd of the night) in the 75th minute, and the final score came after Senior Captain Emma Waters sent a long free kick to Pickelheimer, who crossed the ball to Sophomore Natalie Amodeo making a delayed backside run, catching the Olentangy defensive unit off guard by ripping a shot to the far post to seal the win.

On the season, Dirrig now leads the team in goals (10), and Fike leads the team in assists (10). Check out the Varsity stats HERE.

The entire team contributed to the win, with the defensive and midfield units turning in another well coordinated performance. Junior Goalkeeper Emma Campbell was credited with 7 saves, but was not tested heavily in the match.

In the earlier JVA match, the Pattys battled to a 0-0 draw.

On Wednesaday, JVA traveled to Jonathan Alder and won 4-0, with goals from Hannah Sebek, Laura Bichsel, Emma Niktash and an amazing header goal from Jenna Hastings. Assists were contributed by Lexie Blosser, two from Bichsel, and one by Elise Hecker.

The Patriots end the week with a record of 4-0-1, and after a stretch of 6 games in 12 days for Varsity and JVA Pattys, will enjoy a day off and the weekend to recover.

On Tuesday October 6th, Liberty faces undefeated and #4 State Ranked Dublin Coffman in a match that has Conference Championship implications. The Patriots enter the match 5-0-0 in Conference, while Coffman enters with a record of 4-0-1. Coffman, Liberty and Thomas Worthingon, who stands at 3-0-2, all still have an opportunity to secure an OCC Central Division Championship with 2 games each remaining.

Let’s get a huge home crowd out to avenge last year’s loss to Coffman!

GO PATTYS!
