The Pattys hit the road for the first time this season with a short trip to Dublin Jerome, a rivalry that has heated up in recent years with the most recent matchup resulting in a Liberty 2-0 win in the 2017 Regional Final/Elite 8 by a score of 2-0 and the Pattys winning the last three meetings. Based on the student turnout for Jerome, this match had been marked on their calendar for a while and the atmosphere was fantastic with Liberty students representing in strong fashion on the visitors side as well, accompanied by one of our biggest fans, Assistant Principal Zach Peterson.
Jerome’s talented and experienced squad featured very few key player losses from their 2017 team, and came out strong and established the upper hand for the first half. The first goal of the match came in the 9th minute on a shot from a severe angle that hit the far post and found the back of the net. The Pattys gained composure as the half advanced and managed to hold off the Jerome attack to get to the break down 0-1.
In the second half, the Patriots made adjustments both tactically and mentally, settled in to better form, and as a result the match became more competitive and entertaining. Despite the improved play, Jerome was able to increase it’s lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute when a clearance by the Liberty defense deflected back toward the Liberty goal and was intercepted and a Celtic forward poked in the chance.
Despite the deficit on the road, the Pattys continued to battle and just two minutes later Senior Laura Bichsel beat several Jerome defenders on an extended run and drilled a shot from distance into the left side of the net to cut the deficit to 1-2. The lead was short lived as barely one minute later Senior GK Riley Cartwright made a stellar diving save deflecting a ball from the Upper 90 but Jerome beat the Liberty defense to the loose ball and finished the chance to recapture a two goal lead at 3-1.
Facing their second two goal deficit of the match, Liberty battled back and in the 65th minute Senior Jasmine Hauser converted on a free kick drive from 35+ yards out, with the driven ball finding its way past several Celtic defenders, freezing the screened GK and hitting the back of the net to take the score to 2-3.
For the remaining 15 minutes, Jerome took every opportunity to delay play without consequence, Liberty was not able to equalize and despite a strong effort to the final whistle, lost by the score of 2-3. In the match, Jerome committed a season high 19 fouls and 7 offside calls were whistled. The Pattys registered 12 fouls and no offsides, the corner kick advantage was 5-4 to Jerome, and Jerome had a very slight edge in possession.
In the earlier JVA match, Liberty fell short 0-1, but with a goal called back with a late offside call. On Wednesday, JVB won 5-1 vs. Upper Arlington. All three squads have a quick turnaround with a trip to Centerville on Saturday, click HERE for all teams schedules and results. GO PATTYS!
