Patriots Edge Marysville 2-1
August 30, 2017Pattys Fall Short vs. Gahanna
September 5, 2017On Thursday night, the Liberty Girls returned to Patriots stadium after playing their first four matches of the season on the road, starting the season 2-1-1. The Pattys faced a stiff test in a dynamic Dublin Jerome squad, but would turn in their best team effort of the season to earn a 2-1 victory and secure their third straight victory.
Liberty started out playing into a stiff wind, but it did not deter them from a quick start. In the 5th minute, Abby Townsend got behind the Jerome back line and her shot barely missed outside the far post. Less than two minutes later, Abby Jones took an outstanding through ball from Townsend, won a physical challenge with a defender and finished on the run past the oncoming Celtic GK to give the Pattys a 1-0 edge. In the 15th minute, Liberty would strike again, when Olivia Sensky hit a low driven free kick from about 35 yards into the box which the goalkeeper could not handle, and Gia Gaetano collected the deflection and buried the chance to push the score to 2-0. The rest of the first half was a fairly even battle and the score unchanged at 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, Jerome came out of the break determined to erase the lead and put pressure on the Pattys defense, which consistently turned Jerome away until the 62nd minute when a turnover on the flanks allowed a counter attack that resulted in Jerome’s only score. For the balance of the match, Liberty’s back line of Olivia Sensky, Sydney Weaver, Mara Follmer and Caitlin Curmode held strong and Goalkeeper Riley Cartwright turned in an outstanding performance making 8 quality saves on the night. The final result of 2-1 is a high quality win for the program and will fuel momentum as they look to their match with Gahanna on Tuesday, who knocked Liberty out in the Sweet 16 last year on PK’s.
In the earlier JVA and JVB matchs, Liberty JVA fell by a score of 0-1 and Liberty JVB won 2-1, both over Jerome.
GO PATTYS!
