Varsity & JVA Defeat Westerville South
September 20, 2016Late Goal Lifts Liberty Over Westerville North
September 27, 2016
Pickerington North entered Patriots Stadium on Thursday night ranked #1 in the Central District and #5 in the most recent State Poll, with Liberty ranked #3 in Central District and unranked (but receiving votes) in the state poll.
The Pattys put together their most complete performance of the season over the full 80 minutes and the result showed on the scoreboard with a total team win by a score of 1-0.
The game winner game early in the match, when Senior Emma Koshan sent a corner kick to the far post where Senior Captain Sarina Dirrig beat her mark and drilled a header into the back of the net in the 8th minute.
The remainder of the match was a battle of possession and will between the two strong squads. Liberty controlled possession through the 28th minute of the first half, but the Panthers found more of the ball in the balance of the first half and put pressure on the Pattys until the break.
Liberty came out in the second half and stopped Pickerington North’s momentum and asserted control of possession. Although both teams were fairly evenly matched, the Patriots had the better chances overall including a header off a corner by Abby Townsend that was barely wide and rocket by Sarina Dirrig that hit the crossbar. Liberty outshot the Panthers 11-6.
The win was a total team effort with strong performances by the entire squad. The back 4 of Olivia Sensky, Emma Koshan, Abby Summers and Sydney Weaver held firm, and GK’s Emma Campbell and Grace Poncsak sealed the shutout with excellent work between the posts.
Liberty is now 8-1-0 on the season and returns to action next Tuesday in an important conference matchup at Westerville North.
GO PATTYS!
