On Saturday at a windy and cold Gahanna Lincoln High School Stadium, the Olentangy Lady Patriots faced the Watterson Lady Eagles with the District Championship on the line, and fell short in their goal to reach the regional stage of the OHSAA tournament. Watterson secured the District Championship with a “golden goal” as the first overtime period came to a close, leaving the final score at 0-1.

The momentum in the game was heavily impacted by the 20+ mph winds, with the Pattys having the better of play in the first half with the wind, and the same taking place in favor of the Eagles in the second half.

However, even facing the wind in the first overtime, the Pattys took control of possession and had at least two strong chances to secure the District Championship, but did not find the back of the net.  It appeared that the Patriots would hold off the Eagles and get to the second overtime and gain the wind advantage, but with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime, the Eagles struck against the run of play after a scramble for possession, the ball took a strange bounce to the foot of an Eagle near midfield who served a ball into the box that found the two Eagles onrushing attackers, one of whom finished the chance.

At the time of the goal, many questioned if the Watterson attacker was offside, but after review of the video it appears that although very close, at the time the ball was served the player was just even with the last defender and the linesperson did make the correct call. Given the unfortunate result at Watterson earlier in the season where the referee admitted error and denied the Patriots a victory, it seemed that the “soccer gods” were not on the Pattys’ side this season vs. Watterson.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the Patriots conclude one of the most successful seasons in program history, with only 3 losses in 19 games, and finishing with a final record of 11-3-5. Stay tuned for a season recap and highlights.

Although the girls walk away from the match with the feeling that the season may have ended too soon, congratulations to all of the Patriots players and coaches for their hard work and dedication, and a special thank you goes out to Patriots Seniors Julia Bruno (Captain), Erin Walters (Captain), Sam Carney, Emma Hall, Danielle Prezioso, Elizabeth Peyton and Leah Sagle who on Saturday suited up for the last time.

Next up for the Patriots is the Girls Soccer Banquet on Wednesday, November 13th at 6:00PM at Scioto Reserve, details to follow

GO PATRIOTS!!!!!!!!
